Pam McIntire
Licensed Professional Counselor
About Pam
Pam McIntire is a Licensed Professional Counselor and National Certified Counselor who counsels adults, college students, teens, and parents in Central Virginia. Pam’s therapeutic approach integrates a variety of mental health theories and disciplines and is tailored to each individual.
Pam believes that counseling at its best:
-
provides healing through a nonjudgmental supportive relationship with a therapist,
-
helps clients more deeply understand their own life experience, needs and desires and
-
develops new ways to deal with challenges.
While Pam has a scientific background, she also believes that clients' paths to growth and change evolve from their own unique life experience. Pam believes that counseling is a collaborative process in which she works together with clients to meet their goals. She addresses clients’ individual needs through building a safe place of compassion and understanding for clients to find their own strengths and wisdom. She also provides practical problem-solving skills and creative thinking to address challenges.
Through working together with Pam, clients find that they are more free to be true to themselves and to their aspirations for their lives.
Research in neuroscience and attachment psychology indicates that positive support from a psychotherapist promotes healing and growth. Healing comes from making sense of our experience, deepening our understanding of ourselves, finding our own truth and meaning, and learning new ways of dealing with challenges. Pam incorporates Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) into her work (www.aedpinstitute.org)
Pam began her career in environmental science with a Masters from Duke University and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. Although she greatly enjoyed environmental science, she found a deep love for working directly with people and their personal challenges. Pam completed her counseling graduate degrees (M.Ed. and Ed.S.) at the University of Virginia. Pam has lived in the Charlottesville area for over twenty years. She and her husband have two sons.
